I Took the Cheap Photographer Route…
by Lauren on the Every Last Detail blog
Some excerpts from the article:
“…I took the cheap photographer route. And I’m here to prevent you from doing the same!”
“Here,…photography packages usually start at $2000…minimum. It varies…with the photographers and their experience. Keep in mind that photographers are not just taking photos of you on your wedding day. They also have to edit the photos (which can take up to 30 hours), design the album,…”
Our Take
Every new business owner has to start somewhere and those lacking in experience or extra gear probably aren’t yet justified in charging higher prices. Many of us started out by shooting our first wedding for a friend for nothing more than expenses.
However, that little bit of experience—even just a couple of successful weddings under your belt—is huge. Photographers are significantly better at both photography and business with a year or two of experience. A couple of years gives them the chance to experience this or that going wrong…and learn how to handle it from their professional perspective. And, of course, that’s when they will begin to increase their prices accordingly.
It’s either/or:
- We can charge “just enough” to give clients the basics. This might cover wear and tear on our gear, overhead, and a modest salary. It will not leave room for professional development, insurance, equipment upgrades, inflation from our vendors, or the flexibility to try anything new/different. It also severely weakens our ability to craft a backup plan. If your photographer is only charging $50 an hour and then falls ill on the day of your wedding, how can he afford to hire a replacement for you? If he doesn’t have the funds to join hist local/state/national Professional Photographers organizations, he won’t develop professional relationship will colleagues who can help him out in a time of need.
- We can charge a good/fair amount for the quality service you deserve. We can cover all the essential and necessary expenses, pay ourselves a decent salary for all the blood, sweat & tears we pour into your images, and leave a little breathing room to toss a new idea or fun surprise your direction.
Guess which one is the better-and-worth-every-penny experience?
For a wedding on a smaller budget, there are several ways to save without really comprising. I’ve seen some truly gorgeous weddings that came in under $7,000. I’ve also seen some not-very-pretty weddings that were horrifically expensive. Cut costs in areas that aren’t part of your permanent record of the event.
Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Don’t leave the only permanent record of your Big Day in the hands of inexperienced vendor.

The new wedding color for 2010 is an Art Deco shade of Turquoise Blue. It’s vibrant and exciting and can really add a powerful punch to your wedding look. The color is sweet & sophisticated, yet not too girly for the guys. And, because this color is a blend of blue and green, it has the same calming effects as those colors.
Our version on Kuler
Kuler is an Adobe website that is a fully-functional and interactive color wheel. While a bit linear in design, it allows you to get the exact colors for any combination you might need.
Art Deco Turquoise Blue for 2010
We can’t wait to see this color palette in this year’s weddings, showers, and parties. We expect to see elegant touches of silver and gray to compliment the hearty tones.

With more and more couples footing the bill for their own weddings, budgets have shifted from a “who pays for what” list to a “how much should we allocate” model.
Here are the traditional line items for your wedding budget. You’ll find this or similar recommendations in almost any issue of almost any wedding magazine.
- 10% Wedding Attire
dress, alterations, veil, lingerie, jewelry, shoes, hair/makeup, groom’s tux - 50% Reception
site, catering, bar, cake - 10% Photography
engagement session, bridal session, wedding/reception coverage, album, videography - 10% Flowers
ceremony site, bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, reception centerpieces - 10% Music
ceremony, cocktail hour, reception - 4% Stationery
save the date cards, invitation folios, calligraphy, postage, programs, escort cards, place cards, table cards, menus, favor tags, thank you notes - 6% Additional Expenses
rings, attendants gifts, gifts for each other, marriage license, bridesmaids’ luncheon, welcome baskets, rehearsal dinner, wedding-day transportation, officiant honorarium, favors
Of course, some things may be more important to you than others, and you can adjust the percentages to your liking. Just be careful, however, that you don’t adjust them too far. Your guests will notice if you spend most of the wedding budget on your dress. You might look great, but that won’t overshadow your guests not having a good time.

Michelle Boyd wrote a great post at Bridal Tweet about etiquette for wedding invitations and announcements.
“Thanks a bunch for being a part of our special day. The pictures turned out great!…We love the pictures and can’t decide on which ones to order.”

Now offering: classic one-panel programs for wedding/reception clients.
Programs used to be an extravagance only seen at very lavish events. Thanks to pretty wedding stationery computers and affordable color printers, most weddings now have programs for the guests. In fact, guests have come to expect programs at ceremonies. It’s how they learn who all the bridesmaids are and how all the relatives fit into the picture. Remember, many of your guests only know you and your family or the groom and his. A program can help explain the other half of the wedding to them.
As You Wish photography is proud to offer our classic one-panel program for free for couples who complete the Wedding Worksheet by the due date.
