Knowbility.org is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to “ensure barrier-free I.T. – supporting the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology.”. They have an activity-filled booth each year at South by Southwest’s Interactive conference (SxSWi). Last year, our volunteer experience with them was fabulous. So, this year, we did it again. We volunteered every day of the trade show working the booth and teaching people about all the wonderful things Knowbility does. We also volunteered again for their award program at Scholz Garten where they presented winners of AIR Interactive and the Dewey Awards.

Thank you, Teenya, Desie, Annie, Sharon, and the rest of the staff and volunteers for another great volunteer experience. We love working with you and your events!

For the last two years, we have donated time at the Knowbility booth at the South by Southwest Interactive/Film (SxSWi) Trade Show. Working with technology and designers/developers who help those in need is always a rewarding experience.

During the very limited down time, we grabbed a few hosts of the volunteers/staff at the booth and guests engaging in demonstrations. However, with SxSWi attendance over 15,000 this year—surpassing the number of registrants for SxSW Music—there was very little downtime. What a wonderful problem to have!

Desi also gave fabulous demonstrations to web designers and developers to they could hear how their site “looks” to someone who is visually impaired.

Coming soon:

We also photographed Knowbility’s AirInteractive and Dewey Awards and will post those images soon.

For those who don’t recognize the word “greak”, it’s our little play on words: Spring Break for Geeks! [1]

Doing Our Part – SxSWi

Once again, we are doing our part for SxSW (a.k.a. “South By”) Interactive: SxSWi

  • Volunteering for Knowbility.org
Knowbility is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit whose mission is “to ensure barrier-free I.T. – supporting the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology”
Basically, they help web designers and developers make websites work for everyone
  • Photographing Knowbility’s booth at the SxSW film/interactive Trade Show
  • Photographing a couple of parties
  • And, finally, under the guise of “South By happens in the hallways”, we’re lurking, working in the wings, and attending events where no badge is required

SxSW facts

  • an estimated 12,000 people are attending SxSWi 2010
  • in 2009, approximately 16,500 people attended the film/interactive Trade Show at SxSW
  • wow!

Spring Break

Did we mention it’s also Spring Break for Austin-area schools? ;) We have several portrait sessions lined up for this week from clients who want to take advantage of the days off from school/work and the gorgeous (#whyaustin, on Twitter) weather!

Back Soon

So, we’ll “disappear” for a few days while we learn and absorb all we can about the geek side of our profession. We’ll be back online soon, full of new information.

[1] our version of @SheilaS‘s “Geek Spring Break”. Our version sounds like our honeymoon in Greece!

As You Wish was lucky to have the chance to volunteer at South By Southwest Interactive working closely with the staff and volunteers of Knowbility, a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to "ensure barrier-free I.T. – supporting the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology."
